Day 1 of the Daihatsu YONEX Japan Open 2018 at new venue a success

Tokyo — The 37th edition of the Daihatsu YONEX Japan Open 2018 officially kicked off yesterday but this year marked a first for the tournament as it opened at a new venue. The Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, completed just last year, will also be the site of badminton at the 2020 Olympics.
Despite it’s location on the outskirts of the city, players and fans reacted positively to the facility. Inside the futuristic exterior, the action on court didn’t disappoint, either. While doubles play for round 1 continues today, 2017 champion Viktor Axelsen, Kento Momota and Lin Dan all moved on in men’s singles. While in women’s singles, Akane Yamaguchi, PV Sindhu and Carolina Marin, last year’s champion, are on to the next round.
