Daihatsu YONEX Japan Open 2018 — Kento Momota and Viktor Axelsen quarter final wins set up showdown in the semis

Date
14 September 2018

Tokyo — The quarter-finals at the Daihatsu YONEX Japan Open 2018 saw a number of big-name matchups today, including showdowns amongst some top #TeamYonex players. In men’s singles, Kento Momota (JPN) overcame badminton legend, Lin Dan (CHN). While in women’s singles, Carolina Marin (ESP) upset former World No. 1, Ratchanok Intanon (THA).

Not even Lin Dan was enough to stand in the way of Kento Momota’s current comeback streak. Hot off last month’s gold medal at the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2018, Momota nearly immediately settled into his game, controlling the pace and flow of the match, deciding it in just two games and 43 minutes, 21-8, 21-10. Viktor Axelsen (DEN) also only needed two games to put away Anthony Ginting, 21-17, 21-15, though it took a full hour to do it. Momota and Axelsen draw each other in tomorrow’s semi-final round in another highly anticipated meeting.

In women’s singles, the energy of Carolina Marin, also a gold medalist at the World Championships, met the patience and precision of Ratchanok Intanon for the eighth time in their careers. Though Intanon leads the series with five wins, and the pair traded points back and forth for 47 minutes, eventually it was Marin who edged out a win, 21-18, 21-19.

Meanwhile, in men’s doubles, the world’s top pair survived a scare at the hot hands of the Dutch pair who eliminated Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen in the previous round. Though Marcus F Gideon and Kevin S Sukamuljo quickly jumped out to a one game lead, they seemed to lose their focus in the second. But by the third game, they re-found their footing and will advance to the semi-finals after a 21-10, 12-21, 21-14 win.

In women’s doubles, current World No. 1s, Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota of Japan, booked their spot with a victory over the 6th seeded Thai pair, 21-12, 21-7, by again putting up a seemingly impenetrable wall of defense.
